Rationale

Ao is a 5cmc 5/4 flying vigilance Dragon Spirit whose death trigger provides meaningful board recovery: either cheat up to 4 MV worth of nonland permanents from the top 7 onto the battlefield, or pump all creatures and Vehicles with two +1/+1 counters. A resilient midrange threat that punishes removal; the +1/+1 counter mode is especially potent in Vehicle and wide-board shells, while the cheating mode rewards toolbox/value builds. Bracket 2-4 range as a solid mythic midrange threat without combo-enabling potential.

Learnings (3)

  • The cheat-onto-battlefield mode looks at the top 7 and places permanents with TOTAL mana value 4 or less — not 4 or less each — meaning you can only put one or two low-MV cards into play, not several 4-MV permanents.

  • The +1/+1 counter mode hits Vehicles explicitly, making Ao a standout death trigger in vehicle-matters decks that also run creature crews.

  • Because both modes trigger on death rather than ETB, Ao is resistant to bounce (which would negate ETB payoffs) but still falls short if exiled rather than destroyed or sacrificed.
