Rationale

Chameleon is a 4cmc Clone variant that copies a creature you already control (not any target), making it weaker than classic Phantasmal Image or Clone since it requires a friendly creature to copy. Its Mayhem ability lets it recur from the graveyard after a discard, giving it synergy with wheels and discard-outlet strategies. Niche at best — copying your own creature is less flexible than copying any creature, and 4cmc is steep for a conditional copy effect.

Learnings (3)

  • Chameleon copies only a creature YOU control (not any creature), making it strictly weaker than traditional Clone effects like Phantasmal Image or Spark Double that can copy opponents' threats.

  • The Mayhem mechanic requires the card to have been discarded the same turn you cast it from the graveyard — wheels, Faithless Looting, and similar effects are the cleanest enablers; incidental discard is not reliable enough.

  • Because the copy is of a creature already on your board, Chameleon is best in flicker or ETB-centric shells where a second copy of your best ETB creature is a meaningful advantage.
