Rationale
Excava is a 4cmc 3/3 flying haste legendary that on each attack reanimates an artifact, creature, or non-Aura enchantment (MV ≤3) from the graveyard as a 1/1 flying Spirit with a finality counter (preventing repeated recursive abuse). Haste lets it attack immediately for value, making it a reanimator engine that slots well into graveyard-matters, aristocrats (recurring low-MV ETB creatures), and spirit-typal shells. The finality counter restriction means returned cards are one-and-done, limiting it compared to unconditional reanimators.
Learnings (3)
The finality counter means returned permanents are permanently exiled on death — this intentionally prevents infinite loops with recursive ETB creatures (e.g. Myr Retriever), so build around sacrifice-and-forget value rather than looping.

Excava reanimates non-Aura enchantments and artifacts too, not just creatures — low-MV enchantment targets like Eidolon of the Great Revel or Portable Hole are within range and often overlooked.

Because the returned permanent becomes a 1/1 Spirit with flying IN ADDITION to its other types, low-MV lords or anthem creatures (like Spirit-matters payoffs) can come back and still contribute their static abilities before dying.
