Rationale

Gwenom is a 5cmc 4/4 deathtouch+lifelink threat whose attack trigger provides a powerful Yawgmoth's Bargain-style impulse draw — playing cards off the top while paying life instead of mana. This is a premier midrange threat in black: deathtouch discourages blocks, lifelink offsets the life-payment cost of casting free spells, and the engine generates card advantage every combat. Most at home in lifegain and midrange shells; the attack-trigger dependency and 25-starting-life constraint make it slightly riskier in Brawl but the deathtouch/lifelink body makes it very effective at closing in 1v1.

Learnings (3)

  • The life-payment cost for casting spells off the top is cumulative with the lifelink trigger — deathtouch encourages opponents not to block, which means Gwenom frequently connects and recoups the life spent on spells cast that turn.

  • Gwenom's top-of-library play window lasts until end of turn after the attack trigger resolves, so instants cast from the top are legal during opponents' turns if Gwenom attacked that turn — a subtle political and interaction window.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • In Brawl at 25 life, casting high-MV spells for free via life payment can be dangerous; prioritize low-to-mid MV spells to avoid dropping into lethal range while still gaining advantage.
