Rationale

Hofri is a 5cmc Boros commander that provides a built-in death-trigger engine: nontoken creatures that die are exiled and return as Spirit token copies with trample and haste from his static anthem. This creates a double-dip value loop — ETB triggers fire twice (once on the original, once on the Spirit token), making him a signature piece in aristocrats and creature-ETB-value shells. The Spirit tokens also synergize with any Spirit typal payoffs. He's a must-answer threat that draws immediate removal.

Learnings (3)

  • Hofri's token copy triggers ETB effects a second time on the original creature's death, enabling double-ETB loops with creatures like Solemn Simulacrum or Burnished Hart in the same turn the original dies.

  • The Spirit token's 'leaves battlefield' trigger returns the card to the graveyard (not hand), so Hofri does not protect creatures from exile-based removal — it only intercepts destruction and sacrifice.

  • Because the Spirit tokens have haste from Hofri's static ability, they can immediately attack or tap for abilities the turn they are created, making sacrifice outlets paired with Hofri extremely mana-efficient for chaining value.
