Rationale

Kingpin is a 4cmc 3/6 menace that generates two Treasures whenever you sacrifice any creature (including himself), once per turn. He is a strong value engine in aristocrats and sacrifice shells — two Treasures per sacrifice loop is excellent mana recovery — but the once-per-turn cap prevents degenerate infinite loops, keeping him firmly in the powerful-but-fair tier-2 range for Commander. In Limited he is a bomb: a sticky large body with menace plus guaranteed Treasure generation on any sacrifice or trade.

Learnings (3)

  • The 'triggers only once each turn' clause is a hard cap — even if you sacrifice multiple creatures in one turn (e.g. via a sac outlet), you only net two Treasures total for that turn, not two per creature.

  • Kingpin's self-sacrifice is included in the trigger, so he can be a one-shot ramp piece: sacrifice him in response to a removal spell to guarantee two Treasures before he dies.

  • In mono-black Commander, the two Treasures double as off-color mana fixing, making him notably better in decks splashing for activated abilities or commander costs that need colorless or other colors.
