Rationale

Kraven is a 3cmc Gruul vigilance threat whose power scales to the greatest mana value among permanents you control — rewarding decks with high-CMC permanents (big artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, or a high-cost commander). A 4-toughness body with vigilance is solid, but power is entirely dependent on what's on board, making him a good-stuff payoff rather than a standalone threat. Best in midrange or ramp-big-mana shells where large permanents are common.

Learnings (3)

  • Kraven's power checks the greatest mana value among ALL permanents you control, not just creatures — so a high-CMC artifact, enchantment, or planeswalker on board (e.g., a 7-drop) can make him a 7/* vigilance attacker without attacking himself.

  • His 4 toughness is fixed and respectable for a 3-drop, making him a durable blocker even when his power is low early in the game.

  • In Commander, Kraven as the commander himself benefits from other players' big-CMC spells being irrelevant — only your own permanents count, so the build must deliberately include high-MV permanents to enable consistent large power.
