Rationale

Leonardo is a 1W 2/1 that operates as a cheap aggressive beater with a sneak alt-cost ({3}{W}{W}) that lets him enter tapped and attacking and pump your whole board by +2/+0 — a strong combat-turn payoff in go-wide aggro. The activated first strike ability makes him a credible equipment-voltron carrier or combat trick threat. In Commander he's too narrow and low-impact outside dedicated combat/aggro shells, but in 1v1 Brawl at 25 life the alpha-strike potential is real.

Learnings (3)

  • The sneak cost requires returning an UNBLOCKED attacker during the declare blockers step — meaning at least one of your creatures must already be unblocked before you can pay the sneak cost, so it's weakest when the opponent has a wide board.

  • Leonardo's +2/+0 pump applies to ALL creatures you control, not just attackers, so he can swing a board stall even in wide-board scenarios when snuck in mid-combat.

  • The {1}{W} first strike activation makes Leonardo a surprisingly dangerous combat trick target for equipment like Sword of Fire and Ice or Colossus Hammer in voltron shells, since first strike plus high power is a strong combat deterrent.
