Rationale

Leonardo is a 4cmc 3/3 double-striker with sneak (alt-cost: return a tapped creature to hand, enters attacking) and a unique graveyard recursion clause letting you recast small creatures (power/toughness ≤1) from your graveyard, stamped with finality counters so they exile on death. He is a signature recursion engine in white graveyard/reanimator shells that flood the yard with utility 1-power creatures (mana dorks, hatebears), and pairs excellently with aristocrats decks that don't mind the finality-counter exile. Sneak makes him an aggressive threat in Limited or Brawl, attacking immediately at flash speed during blockers. Voltron and pure control lists gain little from him — his recursion clause requires a full graveyard and a wide board of small creatures.

Learnings (3)

  • The graveyard recursion clause is restricted to creatures with power OR toughness 1 or less — a 1/3 defender qualifies, as does a 3/1, making it broader than it first appears.

  • Finality counters on the recurred creatures mean they exile on death, so aristocrats decks lose the death-trigger loop but still get the ETB value; plan around ETB-focused small creatures rather than death-trigger loops.

  • Sneak's alt-cost returns an already-tapped attacker to hand at declare-blockers, so Leonardo can be deployed as a surprise double-strike attacker on your turn for {2}{W}{W} — useful in Brawl to close out a 25-life opponent unexpectedly.
