Rationale

3cmc 1/3 deathtouch legendary — whenever another creature ETBs, you may pay life equal to its power to load that many +1/+1 counters onto it, turning every creature drop into a potential threat. Signature in plus-one-counters and counters-voltron shells that want to magnify their creatures, and synergizes strongly in aristocrats/flicker loops where creatures repeatedly ETB. Life-cost scales dangerously with high-power creatures and punishes life-loss strategies; at 25 starting life in Brawl, the cost is notably more painful than in Commander.

Learnings (3)

  • The life payment scales with the entering creature's POWER, so dropping a high-power creature like a 10/10 costs 10 life — budget carefully in 25-life Brawl or greedily life-costing creatures can self-lose.

  • Madame Null pairs exceptionally well with token generators producing 0-power tokens (which cost 0 life) alongside flicker effects that repeatedly re-trigger ETBs on high-power creatures at a chosen cost.

  • Deathtouch on a 1/3 body makes her a credible blocker/deterrent even when the life-payment engine isn't relevant, meaning she's never a completely dead card on board.
