Rationale

Mai is a 2cmc 1/3 Prowess creature that pumps with each noncreature spell; the one-time Exhaust ability grants a double strike counter, making her a potent voltron-style spellslinger threat once online. She is signature in prowess/spellslinger shells and works well as a low-curve commander in counters-voltron; the Exhaust ability is a meaningful one-shot upgrade but requires {4} total investment and is per-game limited.

Learnings (3)

  • The double strike counter placed by Exhaust is a permanent counter (not end-of-turn), so it persists across turns and stacks with Prowess pump — this makes Mai a genuine kill threat in spellslinger-heavy turns.

  • As a 2cmc legendary, Mai comes down early enough to threaten commander damage victories in Brawl/EDH before opponents stabilize, especially in a mono-red shell with cheap cantrips and rituals.

  • Because Exhaust can only be activated once ever, timing the double strike counter is critical — ideally activate it in the same turn you cast several noncreature spells for a lethal Prowess swing.
