Rationale

Mysterio is a 4-mana 3/3 that creates a 3/3 Illusion Villain token for each nontoken Villain you control when he enters, but those tokens are exiled if he leaves — making the payoff highly dependent on board presence and punished by removal or bounce. He fits best in Villain-tribal tokens-go-wide shells in a Spider-Man/Marvel set context, but the token loss-on-exit clause severely limits his reliability in Commander's removal-heavy environment.

Learnings (3)

  • The tokens are exiled when Mysterio leaves the battlefield for any reason — bounce, flicker, or sacrifice will wipe out all the tokens he created, making flicker strategies actively harmful rather than synergistic.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • Mysterio's token count scales with nontoken Villains already in play at ETB, so he rewards building a Villain-dense board before casting him rather than being a standalone play.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • In a Villain-tribal shell, Mysterio can create multiple 3/3 tokens in a single ETB, but since tokens are not Villains (unless otherwise stated), those tokens don't feed subsequent Mysterio castings.
