Rationale

Namor is a 5cmc 4/4 flying Merfolk lord that grants flying to all other Merfolk with +1/+1 counters, and generates a connive trigger at the beginning of combat each turn (looting and potentially placing a +1/+1 counter). In Merfolk typal decks, the synergy is strong: connive feeds +1/+1 counters onto creatures, unlocking the evasion grant; outside Merfolk density, he functions as a standalone looting/counters engine. The evasion-grant scales well with a tribal board but is weak in non-Merfolk shells.

Learnings (3)

  • Namor's flying grant only applies to Merfolk that already have a +1/+1 counter — the tribe needs to connive or otherwise receive counters before evasion kicks in, so the payoff is not immediate even in a Merfolk-heavy build.

  • Connive triggers at the beginning of combat, not on cast or ETB — this means Namor needs to survive to your next combat step to generate value, making him more vulnerable to sorcery-speed removal than he might appear.

  • In non-Merfolk decks, Namor still provides repeatable looting/counters on any creature, making him a niche but serviceable counters-voltron enabler in mono-blue.
