Rationale

Old Hob creates a free 2/2 haste Mutant token every combat that self-destructs at end step — consistent attack pressure but no board accumulation unless the {1}{W} indestructible activation is used to save a token. At 5 mana in Brawl (1v1, 25 life) the repeatable hasty threat is meaningful, but in Commander the tokens die at end step limiting wide-board synergies and aristocrats value without dedicated protection support.

Learnings (3)

  • The ephemeral token is destroyed at the beginning of the NEXT end step — meaning it survives combat and can still trigger aristocrats/death effects if sacrificed or traded before that cleanup trigger resolves.

  • The {1}{W} protection ability targets any attacking creature token, not just the one Old Hob creates — it synergizes with any token-producing allies at the table or in the deck.

  • Because the tokens are destroyed (not sacrificed), death-trigger payoffs like Zulaport Cutthroat still fire, but sacrifice-outlet synergies (Viscera Seer, etc.) must be activated before the destruction trigger to gain that value.
