Rationale

Rat King is a 4cmc legendary 3/3 with menace that generates a 1/1 Rat token whenever any nontoken creature you control leaves the battlefield (death, exile, bounce, flicker), then converts those tokens into cards via a {2}+sac outlet. It's a self-contained engine for aristocrats and sacrifice shells, providing both the fodder and the draw, and is a natural commander or 99 pick for Rat tribal. The creature density requirement and sorcery-speed-equivalent activation cap its ceiling compared to true engines.

Learnings (3)

  • The token generation triggers on ANY nontoken creature leaving the battlefield — not just death — so flickering your own creatures (blink effects) or bouncing them also produces Rat tokens, enabling non-sacrifice loops.

  • As a commander, Rat King pairs particularly well with board wipes in a sacrifice shell: a Damnation or Toxic Deluge with many creatures out floods the board with Rat tokens immediately, giving you fodder for the draw outlet on the very next turn.

  • The draw ability costs {2} per token sacrificed and is not tied to the trigger — it functions as an independent mana sink, meaning you can bank up tokens over multiple turns and then spend mana drawing cards in a burst during a slower turn.
