Rationale

Sandman is a lands-matter threat whose P/T scales with lands controlled, making it an increasingly large evasive body in land-heavy decks; it can't be blocked by small creatures (power ≤2), which is meaningful once you control 6+ lands. The activated ability doubles as graveyard recursion for itself and a land, giving lands-matter and self-mill shells added resilience. The {3}{G}{G} recursion cost is steep and sorcery-speed, limiting utility outside a dedicated ramp shell.

Learnings (3)

  • Sandman's evasion ('can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less') becomes effectively unblockable by the entire board in most creature-light control or combo metas, making it a surprisingly threatening late-game attacker once you have 8+ lands.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • The activated ability returns BOTH Sandman and a land from your graveyard simultaneously, making it uniquely synergistic with self-mill or fetch-heavy land strategies that regularly bin lands — it recurs itself AND rebuilds your mana base.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • Sandman's P/T scales with lands you CONTROL, not lands in your graveyard, so mass land destruction dramatically shrinks it; opponents who wipe lands can neutralize Sandman as both a threat and a recursive engine in one action.
