Rationale

Scriv is a 4cmc WB flying/deathtouch threat that ETB or attacks to attach Contract Aura tokens to opponents' creatures — forcing either a punishing +2/+0 buff when attacking opponents (goad-like aggression) or a 2-life drain when attacking you. It's a soft goad/stax piece and life-drain engine that fits control shells looking to redirect combat pressure. In multiplayer, the Contract tokens create table tension and political pressure, making Scriv a natural fit in stax-prison and aristocrats-adjacent lists that leverage opponent life loss. It's less impactful in 1v1 Brawl where the goad mechanic has no third player to redirect aggression toward, significantly weakening the Contract's threat.

Learnings (3)

  • The Contract Aura token's power is highly multiplayer-dependent: in 4-player Commander, opponents are incentivized to attack each other to gain the +2/+0, but in 1v1 Brawl the enchanted creature always attacks you (no 'other opponent' exists), so the token becomes a pure 2-life-per-attack drain trigger rather than a goad effect.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • Scriv triggers on BOTH entering AND attacking, meaning repeated attacks generate multiple Contract tokens across different opponent creatures, potentially covering every threat on the table over a few turns.

  • Because Contract tokens are white Aura enchantments, they interact with enchantment-matters and aura-matters payoffs (e.g. Sram, Estrid, enchantress effects) in unexpected ways even though they don't attach to your own creatures.
