Rationale

Smellerbee is a 4cmc red aggro commander/creature that grants haste to the whole team and provides attack-triggered hand refuel: discard hand, draw equal to attacking creatures. Signature in wide-board aggro and tokens-go-wide shells where attacking with many creatures turns the wheel into a large draw. The discard-draw is a meaningful payoff when 5+ creatures attack but is symmetrically risky if the hand is large — best in decks that empty their hand quickly anyway.

Learnings (3)

  • The draw trigger scales with total attacking creatures, not just those with haste — even non-haste creatures that were already on board count, making the refuel stronger in wide token decks than it first appears.

  • Discarding your hand before drawing is a cost, not a may-cost on the discard — you must empty your hand fully before drawing, which can be a liability if you hold high-value cards like removal.

  • Smellerbee's haste grant applying to 'other creatures' means it doesn't give itself haste — it needs to survive a turn before acting as the haste-anthem, making it somewhat fragile as a turn-4 play into open removal.
