Rationale
Stegron is a 5/4 menace for 5 mana with an alternative discard ability: pay {1}{R} and discard it to give a creature +3/+1 and the Dinosaur type until end of turn. As a body, it's a reasonable aggressive threat with evasion (menace), but 5 CMC is expensive for red aggro. The Dinosaur Formula ability is niche — mainly relevant in Dinosaur typal shells where granting the Dinosaur type to non-Dinosaurs matters for enrage/tribal synergies — but discarding a 5/4 for a temporary pump is poor card economy outside of that specific context.
Learnings (3)
The 'Dinosaur Formula' discard ability's primary value in Dinosaur typal is enabling enrage triggers or other 'Dinosaur matters' payoffs on non-Dinosaur creatures, not the +3/+1 pump itself — the type-grant is the hidden upside.
tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6
Discarding a 5-CMC threat for a one-turn pump is a steep cost; this ability is most relevant in hand-flooding situations or when the game is already in a dominant position where tempo loss is acceptable.

As a Legendary Dinosaur Villain, Stegron can serve as a budget Dinosaur commander in casual brackets, but competes poorly with premier Dinosaur commanders like Gishath or Pantlaza who offer far more value.
