Rationale

A 5/4 for 4 in green that grants haste to a creature each combat if your board has total power ≥8 — a condition Surrak himself almost single-handedly satisfies alongside any other decent creature. Solid in midrange and big-power aggro shells where it enables immediate attacks with freshly-cast fatties. Falls off in control/combo where the formidable threshold is inconsistently met and a pure haste-granter isn't worth a slot.

Learnings (3)

  • Surrak's Formidable trigger checks total power at the beginning of combat, so if he is the only creature (5 power), the threshold of 8 is not met — you need at least one additional creature to reliably enable the ability.

  • Because the haste grant targets any creature you control (not just Surrak), it is most impactful when used on a freshly-played high-power finisher, effectively giving that creature haste for free without spending a second card.

  • In a mono-green Brawl or Commander shell, Surrak is often a commander candidate rather than a 99-include because his 5/4 body plus conditional haste grant is best exploited when he is reliably available each game.
