Rationale

The Spot is a 4/4 for 5 that ETB-exiles up to one nonland permanent and up to one nonland permanent card from a graveyard, combining removal and graveyard hate in one body. When he dies, he loops back to the bottom of his owner's library and releases the exiled cards to their owners' hands — making him resilient but not providing permanent removal. Best in control/midrange shells that want repeated ETB value and can recast him; the on-death return-to-library clause means opponents can time their interaction to blank the exile.

Learnings (3)

  • The Spot's on-death trigger returns exiled cards to hands (not the battlefield), so opponents lose any mana invested to replay those cards but do get them back — this is notably weaker than permanent exile removal.

  • Because The Spot returns to the bottom of his owner's library on death (not the graveyard), reanimator and graveyard-recursion strategies cannot recur him through typical means, but in Commander he can be recast from the command zone if used as the commander.

  • The ETB exile of a graveyard card can function as soft graveyard hate, but since the exiled card returns to hand on The Spot's death, opponents can leverage his death to rebuild their graveyard-dependent hands — aggressive sacrifice or bounce of The Spot can be used against the controller.
