Rationale

Thrasios is a 2cmc 1/3 Simic Partner commander whose {4} activated ability generates card advantage or land drops on a repeatable loop — a mana-sink engine that converts excess mana into gas. He is one of the most popular cEDH partner commanders because his ability synergizes perfectly with infinite-mana combos (any infinite-mana engine immediately wins the game by drawing through the deck), and he pairs with virtually any black, red, or white partner for a second commander that provides the combo or stax piece. In Brawl (1v1, 25 life, no infinite mana) his {4} activation is clunky and slow, pulling him to tier-2.

Learnings (3)

  • Thrasios's activated ability is one of the most ubiquitous infinite-mana sinks in cEDH: any engine producing arbitrarily large mana (e.g., Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter) immediately converts into drawing the whole library and putting all lands into play.

  • Because Partner lets him share a command zone, Thrasios is nearly format-agnostic as a second commander — he appears in over a dozen distinct cEDH archetypes simply as the Simic value/outlet half of a two-commander pair.

  • His 1/3 body is largely irrelevant to his function; he is almost never cast for the purpose of attacking or blocking, and the {4} cost means he is typically activated only once per turn in the mid-game or used as an outlet after going infinite.
