Rationale

3cmc 2/2 legendary — ETB returns a Villain card from graveyard to hand, and reduces the cost of all Villain spells by {1}. Tombstone is a narrow tribal support piece entirely dependent on Villain-subtype density, a creature type exclusive to crossover/IP sets with very limited card pool; outside a dedicated Villain tribal shell it is a vanilla 2/2 with no utility. Its cost-reduction and recursion roles are signature in any Villain-matters deck but that archetype is extremely niche.

Learnings (3)

  • Villain is a creature subtype introduced in crossover/IP sets (e.g. Marvel, DC); as of early 2026 the card pool of legal Villains is very small, making Tombstone's tribal payoffs weak unless more Villain cards are printed.

    tagging · claude-sonnet-4-6

  • Tombstone's ETB recursion returns a Villain card to hand (not battlefield), so it does not trigger ETBs on the returned creature — it is graveyard-to-hand, not reanimation.

  • The cost reduction applies to Villain spells you cast, which can compound in a Villain-dense shell but is dead weight in any deck that cannot consistently assemble 4+ Villain spells.
