Rationale

Evolution Witness is a 3cmc 2/1 Elf Shaman Mutant with Adapt 2 ({1}{G}); whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are put on it, return any permanent card from your graveyard to hand. It's a repeatable recursion engine in +1/+1 counter shells — adapt can only trigger once natively but external counter-adding effects (proliferate, Hardened Scales, etc.) can re-trigger the return ability. Signature in plus-one-counters and graveyard-matters strategies that want broad permanent recursion.

Learnings (3)

  • Adapt only fires when the creature has NO +1/+1 counters, so the activated ability is a strict one-time use without ways to remove counters — but the triggered return ability re-fires whenever ANY source adds counters (proliferate, Vorinclex, etc.), making external counter synergies the key to unlocking repeatable recursion.

  • The triggered ability returns ANY permanent card (land, planeswalker, artifact, enchantment, creature), giving it unusual breadth over typical green recursion spells that target only creatures or lands — this makes it a toolbox recursion piece in midrange graveyard shells.

  • In Limited, the 2/1 body for 3 is below curve and the adapt trigger is one-shot without support, making it borderline; in Commander the trigger has more combo potential via proliferate loops but it remains slow and requires setup.
