Why Play This Deck
Rocco, Street Chef is one of Brawl's most devious political commanders — he gifts every player a free card each end step, then punishes everyone for using it. Every time any player plays a land or casts a spell from Rocco's exile trigger, you create a Food token AND grow a creature. The deck weaponizes this symmetry with a dense artifact-payoff package: Academy Manufactor triples every Food into a Food+Clue+Treasure triplet, Night of the Sweets' Revenge drains opponents for each artifact that enters, and Reckless Fireweaver pings the table for each artifact token created. The result is a midrange-tokens engine that wins through incremental life-drain and a wide, counter-pumped board — rewarding patience, punishing aggression, and converting opponents' own card plays into your win condition.
Play Summary
The game plan unfolds in three phases. In the early game (turns 1–3), deploy mana accelerants — Elvish Mystic, Llanowar Elves, Gilded Goose, Birds of Paradise, Avacyn's Pilgrim — to land Rocco on turn 3. Gilded Goose is the premium opener: it creates a Food immediately and banks mana from surplus tokens later. Ragavan on turn 1 is equally strong, generating Treasures and exiling opponent cards to pre-load the exile-play engine before Rocco even arrives. In the mid game (turns 4–6), the exile engine activates and you layer payoffs in priority order: first Academy Manufactor (converts each Food into three artifacts), then Night of the Sweets' Revenge (drains per artifact entering), then Reckless Fireweaver (pings per artifact), then token doublers — Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, Doubling Season, and Mondrak, Glory Dominus — to multiply every token created. Rosie Cotton of South Lane distributes +1/+1 counters to any creature whenever a Food is made, turning passive triggers into a free board-wide anthem. Hardened Scales amplifies every counter placement by one, making Rosie and Archangel of Thune exponentially more powerful. In the late game (turns 7+), close out with Akroma's Will for an instant-speed alpha strike (flying, double strike, lifelink, and indestructible on your whole team), Blasphemous Act to reset a stalled board, or Etali, Primal Conqueror to bury opponents in card advantage. Ashnod's Altar converts surplus Food and creature tokens into colorless mana, fueling large spells or activating Selvala, Heart of the Wilds for explosive mana bursts.
Key Synergies
The core drain engine. When any player plays a card from Rocco's exile trigger, Rocco creates a Food. Academy Manufactor converts that Food into a Food + Clue + Treasure — three artifacts entering simultaneously. Night of the Sweets' Revenge drains each opponent for each artifact that enters, and Reckless Fireweaver pings each opponent as well. With three opponents each playing their exiled card, a single end step generates 9+ damage and 9+ life drained while also producing mana (Treasures) and card draw (Clues). This three-card engine is the primary win condition and should be assembled by turn 5–6.
The token-doubling stack. Each of these independently doubles every token you create. With two doublers in play, each Food Rocco creates becomes four tokens. With Academy Manufactor also active, a single Food trigger becomes twelve artifacts — four Food, four Clues, four Treasures. Mondrak can protect itself by sacrificing surplus Food tokens to put an indestructible counter on itself, making it the most resilient of the four. Doubling Season additionally doubles every +1/+1 counter placed, supercharging Rosie Cotton, Archangel of Thune, Heliod, and Hardened Scales simultaneously.
The lifegain-to-counters pipeline. Food tokens gain you 3 life when sacrificed, triggering both Archangel of Thune (puts a +1/+1 counter on every creature you control) and Heliod (puts a counter on a target creature). Rosie Cotton distributes a counter to any creature whenever any Food is created — not just sacrificed — meaning Rocco's passive end-step triggers grow your entire board for free every round. Hardened Scales adds one extra counter to every counter placement, turning each Rosie trigger into two counters and each Archangel trigger into two counters per creature. Together these four cards transform a passive Food stockpile into a board-wide counter engine that makes every creature enormous within a few turns.
The sacrifice-value package. Ragost makes ALL artifacts into Foods and deals 3 damage to each opponent whenever you sacrifice a Food — stacking directly with Night of the Sweets' Revenge for double drain per artifact sacrificed. Ashnod's Altar converts surplus Food tokens into two colorless mana each, fueling large spells or enabling Selvala, Heart of the Wilds activations. Wurmcoil Engine is a lifelink threat that triggers Archangel of Thune and Heliod when it deals damage, and when it dies it creates two 3/3 artifact creature tokens — both triggering Reckless Fireweaver, Night of the Sweets' Revenge, and Ragost if active.
The exile-matters value engine. Laelia gets a +1/+1 counter every time any card is exiled from any library — Rocco's end-step trigger fires for each player, so Laelia grows by 3+ counters per round without any additional investment. Urabrask forces each opponent to exile their top card each upkeep (denying hand refills) while letting you play those exiled cards, asymmetrically fueling your payoffs. Bonehoard Dracosaur exiles cards from opponents' libraries on attack and creates tokens from the exiled permanents, generating additional bodies. Escape to the Wilds and Showdown of the Skalds both exile cards from your own library for you to play, giving you burst card advantage while also triggering Laelia's counter engine.
Opening Hand
The ideal opening hand contains: at least two lands that produce green mana, one 1-drop mana accelerant (Elvish Mystic, Llanowar Elves, Gilded Goose, Birds of Paradise, or Avacyn's Pilgrim), and at least one mid-game payoff (Academy Manufactor, Night of the Sweets' Revenge, Rosie Cotton of South Lane, or a token doubler). The non-negotiable requirement is a turn-1 green source plus a mana dork — without this, Rocco arrives a full turn late and the exile engine is delayed enough for aggressive opponents to close out. Hands with Gilded Goose are premium: it creates a Food on entry, immediately setting up the artifact-payoff loop, and converts surplus Food tokens into mana later. Hands with Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer are equally strong openers — a connecting hit on turn 1 creates a Treasure and exiles an opponent's card, directly feeding Rocco's exile triggers before he even hits the battlefield. Mulligan any hand missing green mana or a turn-1 play, and be cautious with hands that have payoffs but no engine pieces — a hand of five mana dorks and two token doublers is fast but will stall without Academy Manufactor or Night of the Sweets' Revenge to convert the Food flood into damage.
